The Redline Darter is another beautiful fish that can be found in the waters of Cypress Creek in North Alabama. This darter, like most darters, is very small; about 1" - 3.9" in length. The included photo shows the fish magnified about 10x.
The Redline Darters scientific name is Etheostoma rufilineatum which means 'strain mouth' and 'red lined' respectively.
Darters are so-named because of their habit of "darting" along the bottom from one rock to another. Their movement is so quick it makes it difficult for an observer to discover the location to which they swam.
What does such a small fish eat? They primarily eat small insects such as midges, mayflies, etc.
The Redline Darter can be found in the Cumberland River and Tennesee River drainage systems in Tennessee, Alabama, and parts of Georgia, North Carolina, and Kentucky.
